movie night: pan’s labyrinth

alt : pan’s labyrinth trailer

nancy and i went to see pan’s labyrinth tonight. we showed up a early though, to have a little treat at cafe noir. the cafe is attached to the movie theatre. it’s a bit frou-frou (for monterey) and way too expensive but i have a penchant for coffee and tea, and an even bigger obsession with tasty bad-for-you desserts. oh well! so i got mint tea and nancy got a peanut butter cookie and we shared. the cookie was pretty darn tasty and the mint tea was a good combination.

we had to hurry though and get into the screening room to get good seats. this theatre is sooo small… almost like watching a movie on a big screen TV at a friends house. we went in early because there are probably only 30-40 seats in the room. anyway, don’t want to give too many details about the movie but it was very good. sad subject matter and some shocking violence, mixed with childhood imagination that somehow all fit together very nicely.

i do wish there were more “other world” sequences in this movie though. i wouldn’t really complain about the movie, but it would have been nice. the general plot and writing was good, but i have to say it upheld these kinda boring social norms of having nice clothes and being a princess. like those are the pinnacle of social achievement or something… anyway, enough politics about fantasy movies! haha…

after the movie we headed home and i dunked myself in a bath for a while and then prepared my scuba gear. heading out to dive tomorrow!
